EL Almendro
The locality of El Almendro is set near to the Portuguese border
and close to the town of Villanueva de los Castillejos in the centre
of Andévalo. It´s 1000 inhabitants mainly make their
living working the land. Throughout the area there are extensive
cereal, olive and strawberry fields.
The local restaurants use the local produce and a speciality here
is mushrooms or "turmas" as they are known locally along with wild
asparagus.
El Almendro is surrounded by hills and beautiful countryside.
A great place to walk and admire the stunning views over the town
and nearby Villanueva de los Castillejos.
An old road, with vestiges of old cobbles, leads from the town
to the now abandoned La Isabela Mine about seven kilometers away.
You can stroll to the Prado de Osma and the Chapel of Piedras Albas
as they are situated within walking distance.
The traditional and popular pilgrimage known as the "Romería
de Nuestra Señora de Piedras Albas is celebrated together
with its neighbouring town. This Fiesta takes place every year
during the first Sunday of Easter in the well known spot called
Prado de Osma, where the Chapel of Piedras stands. This romeria
is very traditional and is held with great enthusiasm throughout
the area. Its typical features, such as horsemen, regional dress,
songs and dances, give it plenty of regional character and interesting
local colour . |
